Piscataway was settled in 1666 and incorporated in 1798, making it the fifth-oldest municipality in New Jersey. Very little of the housing is that old, but the township's age shows up in how it grew: in pieces, over three centuries, with sections carved off to form Raritan Township (now Edison) in 1870, Dunellen in 1887, Middlesex in 1913, and South Plainfield in 1926. What remains is a patchwork of named sections residents still use, among them Arbor, New Market, North Stelton, Possumtown, Randolphville, Raritan Landing, and Society Hill.
